• About Department

    Viewing the demand for Core sector professional`s era of rapid industrialization, the department of Mechanical Engineering was developed & became prosperous since beginning. As on date around 720 student’s are studying in Mechanical Engineering Department.
    Department is privileged to have Faculties with consistently good academic record with wide range of qualifications like Masters in Thermal, Production, Design, Automobiles, Refrigeration and Air conditioning etc. Some faculty members are also pursuing their doctorial work under reputed guides. Most of the faculty members have published their research papers in National & International magazines. Over all job experiences of most of the faculty members is varying from plus 10 to 45 years.
    Our faculty’s moto is to build-up strong character, hardworking capacity, sincerity, self-dependency, dedication to studies, society & as well to Nation among students. Along with their studies, they also participate and organize the seminars, workshops, debates, Group Discussions and visits to Industries. This year our students visited Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering, Bhopal; Tractor Testing Centre, Budni; GEI and Hammon industries and BHEL Bhopal. Our prefinal year students prepared important projects, some of which are (i) 8 faces Ceiling Cooler, (ii) Power Generation by using the condensate water from cooling tower in Thermal Power Plant & (3) Design & Development of Soybean Grain Collection machine. Our laboratories are fully developed as per the norms of RGPV, Bhopal. Our library has good stock of technical books, magazines & e-journals. We have been trying & paying attention to research work and developing the rational thinking among our students. Beside this, our students also spare time in playing & participating in tournaments. Our students also celebrated with the disabled child at Disabled Children’s Home, Ashoka Garden Bhopal, before the college events started. In technical events, students organized many programmes the details of which are given separately.

    Thermal engineering is a branch of science that covers energy conversion from one form to another, working of IC engines, modes of Heat transfer, principles of refrigeration and air conditioning etc. The field of thermal engineering includes a lot of applications that can be classified as the combination of thermodynamics and heat transfer, such as IC engines, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. The objective of this laboratory is to provide the student a good environment to understand some very important concepts and applications in the field of IC engines and refrigeration. These concepts are necessary to understand how the typical thermal devices work (refrigerators, air conditioning devices, car engines or steam engines). These fundamentals will be used to link the phenomenological processes taking place in the engine for issues of: power generation, emissions and environmental impact, fuel economy and fuel composition effects on engine operation and mechanical limitations of obtaining ideal performance. This laboratory is also actively involved in advanced research in enhanced heat transfer, solar energy, heat pipes and thermoelectric cooling of high heat flux electronic devices.


    It is one of the important labs for first year student of different branch to provide basic knowledge of Mechanical Engineering. This lab provides knowledge to students about various types of Boilers and cut sections models of various type of engines and measuring instruments like vernier calliper, micrometers, sine bar, comparator, slip gauges, bevel protector etc.


    This lab is incorporated with equipments such as calorimeters (separating calorimeter, throttling calorimeter and combined separating & throttling calorimeter) for measuring quality of steam and models of different boilers includes low and high pressure boilers etc.


    The aim to establish this laboratory is to impart practical knowledge in the field of energy conversion. “Utilising” energy means converting energy from one form into another. This lab is facilitated with equipment such as Steam condensers, Compressors (reciprocating as well as rotary) and different type of turbines such as Pelton Turbine, Francis Turbine and Kaplan Turbine, Centrifugal pumps and Reciprocating pumps.

    In this laboratory, students will have the opportunity to study the working principle of IC engines (both SI and CI engines), performance and characteristics in terms of heat balancing, economical speed variations, air fuel ratio influence on the engine to reinforce classroom theory by having the student perform required tests, analyze subsequent data, and present the results in a professionally prepared report. The machines and equipment used to determine experimental data include cut models of 4stroke diesel engine, 2stroke petrol engine, 4 stroke and 2 stroke petrol engines with required specifications, Multi cylinder SI engine, Single cylinder Diesel engine for performance and speed test which is suitable to tests on variable compression ratios.


    Heat Transfer and mass transfer is one of the important subjects which is commonly applied in renewable energy, industrial, Commercial and domestic systems. The experiments are designed to provide exposure of practical aspects of the various theoretical concepts developed under the course, Heat and Mass Transfer. The laboratory consists of experiments on various conductive, convective, radioactive, boiling and condensing mechanisms of heat transfer Heat & Mass Transfer Lab is well equipped with the following apparatus:


    The objective of this lab is to analyze the performance of an actual refrigerating and air conditioning unit based on experimental measurements. The labs are well equipped with the following test facilities such as vapour compression system, vapour absorption system, ice plant and air conditioning unit.


    Manufacturing technology provides the tools that enable production of all manufactured goods. These master tools of industry magnify the effort of individual workers and give an industrial nation the power to turn raw materials into the affordable, quality goods essential to today’s society.


    The purpose of central workshop is to develop a well-equipped facility in modern manufacturing in order to create interest and awareness to our first year students in modern areas of workshop practices. Also, to provide the necessary impetus and direction to advanced level job work in the institute through project work, research and training. Central workshop has the following wings-


    This lab constitutes of a wide range of lathe, shaper, drilling, and milling machines where students enrich their skills in basic manufacturing like turning, facing, drilling, chamfering, milling, shaping, boring etc. All machines are modern in nature and student get exposure to industrial type of machines.

    CNC LAB :

    This laboratory is aimed at providing an introduction to the Know-how of common processes used in industries for manufacturing parts by removal of material in a controlled manner. Auxiliary methods for machining to desired accuracy and quality will also be covered. The emphasis throughout the laboratory course is on understanding the basic features of the processes and acquiring skill in the operation of machines.


    Machine design or Mechanical Design can lead to the formation of the entirely new machine or it can lead to improvement of the existing machine. Modeling and analysis of machine elements is based upon extensive application of physics, mathematics and core mechanical engineering principles. Subscribing to this view the department has following labs:


    The SOM laboratory contains machines for testing of material like mild steel, copper, aluminium, cubes, and bricks etc. This lab deals with the strength of a material i.e. its hardness, softness, fatigue point toughness, durability, yield point etc. This lab includes the machines by which the strength (impact, tensile, compressive) can be checked along with the variable parameters.


    Objectives of this lab are to impart practical knowledge on design and analysis of mechanisms for the specified type of motion in a machine. With the study of rigid bodies motions and forces for the transmission systems, machine kinematics and dynamics can be well understood. Demonstration exercises are provided with wide varieties of transmission element models to understand machine kinematics.


    The lab is well-equipped and enables students to understand the balancing of machine parts statically and dynamically and also enables them to understand the dynamic behaviour of moving objects. Various experiments with governors, gyroscopes, balancing machines and universal vibration facilities are available to understand machine dynamics.


    This lab deals with the study of vibration in mechanical systems which is concerned with the oscillatory motions of bodies and the forces associated with them. This lab aims to provide understanding of the nature and behaviour of dynamic engineering systems and the capability of applying the knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering to solve engineering vibration problems.

    CAD LAB :

    In this lab the student will know the different techniques of graphical representation for simple parts and assemblies with the sophisticated 2-D & 3-D design and analysis software. Students will be able to design different parts of mechanical equipments and will be able to apply their skills in various designing and manufacturing processes.



    This well-equipped lab enables the students to understand the fundamentals of Automotive Engineering by learning to range domains including basic structure, body style, power plant, wheel and tyre assembly. Major Equipment’s in Automobile engineering lab are Chassis, Synchromesh Gear Box, Hydraulic & Pneumatic Brake, Vehicle Lighting System, Wheels and Tyre, Wind Screen and Clutches.


    The projects laboratory is used by senior mechanical engineering students to assemble and test their Major projects, development and implementation of innovative methods for designing mechanisms, active participants in the creative design, analysis and development of intelligent systems that better serve the future needs of industry and society as a whole.


    This lab deals with various instruments used for precision measuring. The lab possesses various highly sophisticated instruments for research activities. The lab has facilities of vernier caliper, micrometer, depth gauge and height gauge – source of error in measurement ideas on range, precision and accuracy, Slip gauges and their use in linear measurements, Ideas on tolerance allowance, limits, fits, Dial gauges – their use in the measurement of small linear displacements, parallelism and concentricity, Measurements using tool maker’s microscope – tool angles and tool wear etc.


    Engineering graphics Lab is established to address the basic drawings needs of all engineering disciplines. It caters to the needs of all branches of engineering students. This lab is equipped modern fast computing stations, which has modern designing tools like AUTO-CAD installed with them. Since preparation of machine drawings using drafters has been effectively replaced by software procedures, students are directly trained on the same, so that they are better equipped to compete as engineers in competitive global market.

  • Future of Mechanical Engineering

    Mechanical Engineering, the broadest of all Engineering disciplines deals with design and production of tools, machines and mechanical equipments to be used in industries. The industry offers a wide choice of options extending across many interdisciplinary interdependent specialties. Mechanical Engineering is concerned with all types of machinery in industries and all aspects of their mechanism and functioning; the design, development, construction, production, installation, operation and maintenance; such as large steam and gas turbines, components of thermal power stations, internal combustion engines, jet engines, machine tools, air conditioning and heating machines, refrigerators etc to name a few. They design and create new products, and develop materials and ways of making them.

    In a way, Mechanical Engineers are involved in creating the future. They are the driving force behind many of our technologies and industrial processes including innovative products like mobiles, PCs and DVD etc in our modern world. The work of a Mechanical Engineer can be extremely challenging and fulfilling, requiring IT, design and analytical skills together with an ability to work as a team. As their work involves production, transmission and use of mechanical power and heat, they have to analyse the different materials used for the machines and their tolerances, investigate the different energy sources and the power they generate and the design probleProf if any. When designing and making a commercial product they have to take into account all the business and marketing aspects to make sure that the product is affordable. They share interests with many other engineers like Civil Engineers in structures and stress analysis; Electrical engineers in electronics, computing and control theory; Aeronautical Engineers in fluid flow and turbo machinery etc and also design tools needed by other engineers for their work. They work as part of a team with other engineers as well as financial, business and management professionals on a project together. Mechanical Engineers are also responsible for maintenance and repair of the devices. Care has to be taken that the plants give maximum output and the machinery is properly maintained.
