    THERMAL ENGINEERING

    Thermal engineering is a branch of science that covers energy conversion from one form to another, working of IC engines, modes of Heat transfer, principles of refrigeration and air conditioning etc. The field of thermal engineering includes a lot of applications that can be classified as the combination of thermodynamics and heat transfer, such as IC engines, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. The objective of this laboratory is to provide the student a good environment to understand some very important concepts and applications in the field of IC engines and refrigeration. These concepts are necessary to understand how the typical thermal devices work (refrigerators, air conditioning devices, car engines or steam engines). These fundamentals will be used to link the phenomenological processes taking place in the engine for issues of: power generation, emissions and environmental impact, fuel economy and fuel composition effects on engine operation and mechanical limitations of obtaining ideal performance. This laboratory is also actively involved in advanced research in enhanced heat transfer, solar energy, heat pipes and thermoelectric cooling of high heat flux electronic devices.

    INTRODUCTION TO MECHANICAL ENGINEERING LAB: It is one of the important labs for first year student of different branch to provide basic knowledge of Mechanical Engineering. This lab provides knowledge to students about various types of Boilers and cut sections models of various type of engines and measuring instruments like vernier calliper, micrometers, sine bar, comparator, slip gauges, bevel protector etc.
    THERMODYNAMICS LAB: This lab is incorporated with equipments such as calorimeters (separating calorimeter, throttling calorimeter and combined separating & throttling calorimeter) for measuring quality of steam and models of different boilers includes low and high pressure boilers etc.
    ENERGY CONVERSION LAB: The aim to establish this laboratory is to impart practical knowledge in the field of energy conversion. “Utilising” energy means converting energy from one form into another. This lab is facilitated with equipment such as Steam condensers, Compressors (reciprocating as well as rotary) and different type of turbines such as Pelton Turbine, Francis Turbine and Kaplan Turbine, Centrifugal pumps and Reciprocating pumps.
    FLUID MECHANICS LAB: Department has a well equipped and modern fluid mechanics lab.

    IC ENGINE LAB : In this laboratory, students will have the opportunity to study the working principle of IC engines (both SI and CI engines), performance and characteristics in terms of heat balancing, economical speed variations, air fuel ratio influence on the engine to reinforce classroom theory by having the student perform required tests, analyze subsequent data, and present the results in a professionally prepared report. The machines and equipment used to determine experimental data include cut models of 4stroke diesel engine, 2stroke petrol engine, 4 stroke and 2 stroke petrol engines with required specifications, Multi cylinder SI engine, Single cylinder Diesel engine for performance and speed test which is suitable to tests on variable compression ratios.
    HEAT & MASS TRANSFER LAB: Heat Transfer and mass transfer is one of the important subjects which is commonly applied in renewable energy, industrial, Commercial and domestic systems. The experiments are designed to provide exposure of practical aspects of the various theoretical concepts developed under the course, Heat and Mass Transfer. The laboratory consists of experiments on various conductive, convective, radioactive, boiling and condensing mechanisms of heat transfer Heat & Mass Transfer Lab is well equipped with the following apparatus:
    REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING LAB: The objective of this lab is to analyze the performance of an actual refrigerating and air conditioning unit based on experimental measurements. The labs are well equipped with the following test facilities such as vapour compression system, vapour absorption system, ice plant and air conditioning unit.

    MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY

    Manufacturing technology provides the tools that enable production of all manufactured goods. These master tools of industry magnify the effort of individual workers and give an industrial nation the power to turn raw materials into the affordable, quality goods essential to today’s society.

    CENTRAL WORKSHOP: The purpose of central workshop is to develop a well-equipped facility in modern manufacturing in order to create interest and awareness to our first year students in modern areas of workshop practices. Also, to provide the necessary impetus and direction to advanced level job work in the institute through project work, research and training. Central workshop has the following wings-
    MACHINE SHOP : This lab constitutes of a wide range of lathe, shaper, drilling, and milling machines where students enrich their skills in basic manufacturing like turning, facing, drilling, chamfering, milling, shaping, boring etc. All machines are modern in nature and student get exposure to industrial type of machines.
    CNC LAB : This laboratory is aimed at providing an introduction to the Know-how of common processes used in industries for manufacturing parts by removal of material in a controlled manner. Auxiliary methods for machining to desired accuracy and quality will also be covered. The emphasis throughout the laboratory course is on understanding the basic features of the processes and acquiring skill in the operation of machines.

    DESIGN ENGINEERING

    Machine design or Mechanical Design can lead to the formation of the entirely new machine or it can lead to improvement of the existing machine. Modeling and analysis of machine elements is based upon extensive application of physics, mathematics and core mechanical engineering principles. Subscribing to this view the department has following labs:

    STRENGTH OF MATERIAL LAB : The SOM laboratory contains machines for testing of material like mild steel, copper, aluminium, cubes, and bricks etc. This lab deals with the strength of a material i.e. its hardness, softness, fatigue point toughness, durability, yield point etc. This lab includes the machines by which the strength (impact, tensile, compressive) can be checked along with the variable parameters.
    THEORY OF MACHINE LAB : Objectives of this lab are to impart practical knowledge on design and analysis of mechanisms for the specified type of motion in a machine. With the study of rigid bodies motions and forces for the transmission systems, machine kinematics and dynamics can be well understood. Demonstration exercises are provided with wide varieties of transmission element models to understand machine kinematics.
    DYNAMICS OF MACHINE LAB :The lab is well-equipped and enables students to understand the balancing of machine parts statically and dynamically and also enables them to understand the dynamic behaviour of moving objects. Various experiments with governors, gyroscopes, balancing machines and universal vibration facilities are available to understand machine dynamics.
    MECHANICAL VIBRATION LAB : This lab deals with the study of vibration in mechanical systems which is concerned with the oscillatory motions of bodies and the forces associated with them. This lab aims to provide understanding of the nature and behaviour of dynamic engineering systems and the capability of applying the knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering to solve engineering vibration problems.
    CAD LAB : In this lab the student will know the different techniques of graphical representation for simple parts and assemblies with the sophisticated 2-D & 3-D design and analysis software. Students will be able to design different parts of mechanical equipments and will be able to apply their skills in various designing and manufacturing processes.

    AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERING LAB : This well-equipped lab enables the students to understand the fundamentals of Automotive Engineering by learning to range domains including basic structure, body style, power plant, wheel and tyre assembly. Major Equipment’s in Automobile engineering lab are Chassis, Synchromesh Gear Box, Hydraulic & Pneumatic Brake, Vehicle Lighting System, Wheels and Tyre, Wind Screen and Clutches.

    PROJECT LAB : The projects laboratory is used by senior mechanical engineering students to assemble and test their Major projects, development and implementation of innovative methods for designing mechanisms, active participants in the creative design, analysis and development of intelligent systems that better serve the future needs of industry and society as a whole.

    MECHANICAL MEASUREMENT LAB : This lab deals with various instruments used for precision measuring. The lab possesses various highly sophisticated instruments for research activities. The lab has facilities of vernier caliper, micrometer, depth gauge and height gauge – source of error in measurement ideas on range, precision and accuracy, Slip gauges and their use in linear measurements, Ideas on tolerance allowance, limits, fits, Dial gauges – their use in the measurement of small linear displacements, parallelism and concentricity, Measurements using tool maker’s microscope – tool angles and tool wear etc.

    ENGINEERING GRAPHICS LAB : Engineering graphics Lab is established to address the basic drawings needs of all engineering disciplines. It caters to the needs of all branches of engineering students. This lab is equipped modern fast computing stations, which has modern designing tools like AUTO-CAD installed with them. Since preparation of machine drawings using drafters has been effectively replaced by software procedures, students are directly trained on the same, so that they are better equipped to compete as engineers in competitive global market.

    1.Electronics Devices and Circuits Lab

    This Lab includes Electronics Circuit, Electronics Devices and Design Laboratory. This Lab consists of all types of measuring instruments and cathode ray oscilloscope, Power Supply, Multimeters, function generators and various types of experiment kits. This Laboratory is specially designed to enhance the capabilities of the students for designing basic analog circuits like oscillators, multivibrators, amplifiers, drivers etc.

    2. Communication Lab

    The experiments in this laboratory enable the students to gather basic knowledge on communication systems. Here they can perform different experiments which are the fundamental blocks of any communication system used now-a-days. The experiments include study of AM, FM, ASK, FSK, PSK, PAM, PWM, TDM, FDM etc. Advance Communication Lab comprises of Data Communication Trainer, LAN Trainer, Advance controller network trainer, ISDN training system, CDMA trainer.

    3. Digital Circuits Lab

    Introduction to the vast world of digital electronics is given in this laboratory. Students learn to design different combinational circuits like Adder/ Subtractor, Encoder/Decoder, and Code converters. They also learn to design and analyze sequential circuits like Registers/Counters, Analog to Digital Converter and Digital to Analog Converter. It can support different experiments using discrete components and ICs, which are commonly used in industries and laboratories.

    4. Microprocessor systems Lab

    Microprocessor Systems Laboratory is well equipped to do all experiments in 8085 and 8086. 8051 microcontroller trainers and EPROM programmer are provided for carrying out projects. In this laboratory students get their first exposure on the programming of microprocessors like 8085 and 8086. They also perform different application programming such as interfacing many peripherals like display, Stepper motor controller etc. A huge scope of project work lies in this laboratory.

    5. Microwave & Antenna Lab

    Microwave Test Benches operating in the X band with all the associated components and facility to conduct experiments using Gunn Oscillator and Klystron Oscillator Sources enable the students to carry out a variety of experiments. It also includes different practical antennas such as dipoles, Yagi-Uda, Parabolic Reflector, Helical, Loop and Horn antennas that provide facilities to carry out radiation pattern measurements and observing antenna characteristics like directivity, gain, beam width etc.

    6. Digital Signal Processing Lab

    DSP lab is a software and hardware lab. MATLAB software is used in the experiments and to generate input signals to the DSP and to design the filters used in the various hardware examples. The hardware experiments are real-time sample-by-sample processing examples and include aliasing and quantization effects; the circular buffer implementation of delays, FIR, and IIR filters.

    7. Communication Networks and Transmission Lines Lab

    Network Laboratory helps the students to study and analyze the behavior of various network nodes, links, stub and impedance matching etc. Students can also perform the experiments on phase and angle displacement, VSWR measurement, behavior of transmission lines, fault localization and various types of filters.

    8. Instrumentation and Measurement Lab

    Objective of this laboratory is to make the students conversant with the industrial instruments, which are used to measure electrical and non-electrical quantities like resistance, capacitance, frequency, temperature, pressure, flow, level moisture etc. This lab includes study of DC & AC bridges, LVDT, CRO, Function Generator, ADC and DAC. The students are taught about how the instruments are calibrated, maintained through different experimental set-ups. This laboratory familiarizes the students with different static & dynamic characteristics of instruments.

    Software such as MATLAB, XILINX are taught to the students in this lab to enable them to design, analyze & simulate and even compare with industrial SIMUCAD tool for design digital, analog and mixed VLSI circuits. FPGA SPARTAN-3 trainer and CPLD proto board to perform various experiments of the curriculum.

    10. Basic Electronics Lab

    This laboratory is meant for enhancement of fundamental ideas about the basic electronic circuits and components. It can support different experiments on diodes, transistors, FETs, amplifiers, OP-AMPs and various other experiments also.

    11. Project Lab

    This laboratory comprises of Designing and Simulation Software, PROTO- ETCH Etching machine, PCB Drilling machine, PCB Sheering Machine, IC tester, different types of Analog and Digital ICs and various electronic components to implement student’s ideas. This laboratory can also support many experiments and new ideas which are evolved in the mind of students. Student learns all aspects of design, implementation, fabrication and simulation of engineering projects. This has been found to give immense practical utility to the students in their future career.
